Business Driven Research

RESERVOIR's Business Driven Research

One of the main principles behind RESERVOIR's research is to let the requirements from real industry-supplied use cases drive the architecture. These requirements come from three primary sources:

  • The partner use cases submitted by Sun, Thales, Telefonica, and SAP.
  • Requirements gathered by other European Union sponsored projects and shared with RESERVOIR, typically through the Virtualized Service Platform working group.
  • Requirements given by our SME feedback partners.

The RESERVOIR partner use cases

The use cases contributed by RESERVOIR industrial partners span a breadth of areas, including:

  • The development of a "Platform as a Service" (PaaS) offering, allowing a telco to host owned or third party services over a RESERVOIR Compute Cloud.
  • An eGovernment application which typically exhibits large spikes in resource capacity, as well as geographical restrictions on the placement of virtual resources,
  • The ability to dynamically provision and scale-on a complex three-tiered business application, while working to reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
  • A Utility Computing scenario, where the applications being run are characterized by the unpredictability of their performance, a frequently changing of required resources, and the requirement for a pay-as-go billing model.

RESERVOIR and collaborating SMEs

The RESEVOIR feedback group is composed of a number of small to medium sized enterprises who are given early access to RESERVOIR documentation and concepts to help these companies think about how they can better utilize cloud computing technologies in their business. In exchange, the SMEs provide their insights on how RESERVOIR could be better adapted to meet their requirements.

If you would like to participate in the SME feedback group, please contact the RESERVOIR Project Coordinator, Eliot Salant (salant@il.ibm.com)
